What is vaginal atrophy?

Vaginal atrophy is the thinning of the vaginal tissues due to the lack of estrogen after menopause. The lack of estrogen causes the tissues to thin, become drier, less pliable, and more sensitive. This can result in painful intercourse, more frequent vaginal and urinary tract infections, and even vaginal discomfort on a daily basis. Even though women can use lubricants, the loss of elasticity within the tissues may cause intercourse to be extremely painful.

What is MonaLisa Touch®?

MonaLisa Touch® is a state-of-the-art technique that involves using a laser wand to send energy impulses into the vaginal tissues. The energy waves stimulate the production of collagen and elastin causing the tissues to become more elastic and pliable. The rejuvenation of the tissues also works to increase the amount of fluids and mucous produced in the area. As the tissues thicken and become more flexible, the walls of the vagina begin to take on their original tone and texture, making sexual intercourse much more comfortable and pleasurable. The use of a laser to perform this type of procedure takes approximately 30 minutes per session and produces long lasting results.

What are the side effects of laser procedures?

Woman and Doctor filling out formsLaser procedures are non-invasive, and therefore may only produce minor side effects following the procedure. Instead of using an incision, the laser emits a light or sound wave into the tissues to produce the desired results. The waves of energy produce heat as they pass through the tissues. This can result in minor side effects, such as a tingling sensation near the treatment site. The treatment area may also feel warm to the touch and slightly sore. Redness, similar to that of a mild sunburn, may also be visible. Each person will have varying degrees of reaction, and some patients may have no reaction at all. In most cases, the side effects will disappear within a few days and the results will be visible within 2-3 weeks.
